At Northwest Kidney Council, we’ve always believed that our community is only as strong as the people who care for it. As we celebrate Nephrology Nurses Week (Sept. 8 – 14), we want to take a moment to honor and appreciate the incredible work of the nephrology nurses who are at the very heart of kidney care.
Nephrology nurses are more than just healthcare providers — they are lifelines for patients navigating the many challenges of kidney disease. From managing complex dialysis treatments to providing critical education and emotional support, these nurses are on the front lines, ensuring that every patient receives the highest level of care. Their expertise, dedication, and compassion make a profound difference in the lives of those they serve.
We have had the pleasure of meeting with several nurses during our advocacy work over the years and want to take a moment to highlight what they wished more people knew about being a nurse.
Justin Martin wants you to know that all nurses put their patients first. Kelsi Blake wants you to recognize the symptoms of kidney disease before it’s too late. Allan Borja wants you to know that being a nurse takes a lot of sacrifice.
In recent years, the landscape of healthcare has shifted dramatically, with nephrology nurses stepping up to the challenge. Whether adapting to new technologies or providing care during a pandemic, these nurses have shown remarkable resilience and flexibility. Their ability to adapt in times of change has ensured that patients continue to receive the care they need, no matter the circumstances.
Given this evolving reality, the Northwest Kidney Council has been pleased to work on several pieces of legislation aimed at improving the experience of nephrology nurses and the patients they serve. Whether it was a nurse licensure compact bill in Oregon or improving nurse staffing laws in Washington, we have been grateful for the opportunity to help make progress for this community.
As we look ahead, we know that nephrology nurses will continue to play a critical role in advancing kidney care. Their insights and experiences are invaluable as we work together to improve patient outcomes, advocate for policy changes, and support research initiatives. The future of kidney care is bright, thanks to the dedication and innovation of these amazing professionals.
Thank you, nephrology nurses!
